Coachella Festival Day 1 (2012-04-20)

Girls
Having caught these guys (Girls...) at Meredith 2010 and not being overly impressed with the set I had mixed feelings going into this. I'm not overly familiar with the new album either which didn't help. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this set. The new songs turned out to be my favorites played too which was a surprise. The backup singers were a nice addition and the slower feel of the newer songs really 'fit' with where I was at that time.
Also, I can honestly say this is the hottest I've ever felt watching a band. Sweat was just dripping off me at a much higher rate than it should. It was ridiculous!

Arctic Monkeys
For one reason or another I've never seen these guys before despite being a slightly higher than casual fan for 6-7+ years now. I guess I've just never been able to commit to a show or something. Regardless, it was great to finally be able to see them and the half set I did see was everything I thought it would be... fun, catchy, and dancable. I left mid way through to go see WU LYF for two reasons. It was really hot and I really wanted to see WU LYF.

WU LYF
I listen to WU LYF's album and it just blows me away. And this set does the same thing. Not surprising really because they pretty much played the album, in order for it. But it's hard not too when you don't have much material.
I also didn't realise how fucked the singer dude's voice was until he spoke between songs. What's going on there?

Pulp
Oh my god Jarvis I want to have your adopted babies!
This time last year I was beside myself because I was anticipating seeing Pulp for the first time. Something I never thought I would witness. Flash forward a year and there I was seeing them for the second time. Sometimes I consider myself pretty lucky when it comes to bands I love.
Anyway... Pulp put on one of the best festival sets ever. As expected it was quite Different Class heavy but when your doing a reunion tour you tend to play your most known material (as Refused would do later in the night as well). I was stoked to see them do Monday Morning because they didn't do that last time I saw them but other than that I'd already seen everything. Now, this might seem like a complaint but it isn't. I would be over the moon if they came out and played the same song 11 times in a row. I mean, come on, it's Pulp right!

Between Pulp and Explosions I caught most of The Rapture and to be honest it was the worst time I spent at the festival. For some reason all the dickbags were near me and I just wasn't enjoying anything. Kind of funny considering the awesomeness of bands either side of them I saw. Anway, I have a half recording of them and maybe will get it up sometime in the future.

Explosions In The Sky
Loved this set. Absolutely loved it!!
After the disappointment of The Rapture this was exactly what I needed to turn my mood around. Arriving just as they started we took a spot pretty far back on the field and sat down to watch. About 20 minutes later we moved to the right and much much closer to the stage. There my girlfriend and I took the chance to lay down and appreciate the band. Well, I did.... Tab doesn't like post-rock so i think she was trying to sleep through it. So while she tried to fall asleep I used her as a pillow to watch the band. And quite frankly, it was one of the best times I had that weekend. It's amazing how much I enjoy watching this band and it just felt so nice to relax and watch them after the heat we had to endure earlier in the day.
You may here some sound bleed from The Black Keys in this one because they were on mainstage and stupidly loud and boring.

Refused
Whoa! Refused have always been a band I've wanted to see but never been on my 'must see' list because quite frankly, I never gave them a chance of playing again. So needless to say I was pretty surprised and very excited to see them on the lineup.
This set just ruled. 14-15 odd years on and these guys haven't lost it. They just destroyed the outdoor stage and set the precedent for my other reunion band (At The Drive-In) to follow a few days later. A bit more variety in the setlist would have been cool but when you're playing material from an album as awesome as The Shape of Punk To Come you can get away with it.

Coachella Festival Day 3 (2012-04-22)

Didn't see as many bands on this day. In fact I hung out at mainstage from Hives onwards and only caught Real Estate prior to that.

At The Drive-In
So sometime early January I woke up to a message from my good friend Mark which I didn't believe. In it he said At The Drive-In were playing a show. I quickly jumped online to confirm and sure enough they were doing Coachella. The next hour consisted of talks with my girlfriend about travelling overseas to attend Coachella. In hindsight the talks were pointless because to be honest, I was always going to be there. For years I've been saying if they reunited I'd be there regardless of where it was and I held true to my word. I'd have seen an earlier show but we didn't arrive until after the Texas shows and we couldn't get tickets to weekend one. Turns out weekend two was better anyway because of the extra songs.

Boy & Bear @ Forum Theatre, 16/05/2012

It really doesn't seem like that long ago that I was seeing some little-known Sydney folk quintet opening for Mumford & Sons at the Palace Theatre in 2010, but here we are two years later and Boy & Bear are pretty much, in Australia at least, on a level playing field with that band. Their debut EP With Emperor Antarctica was a huge success, no doubt due to the unbelievably catchy pair of tunes Mexican Mavis and Rabbit Song, and the songs that followed it, and the Moonfire album in 2011, have earned Boy & Bear plenty of love from the musical community in this country. After a successful run of shows in 2011, both prior to and following the Moonfire release, and a well-received slot at this year's Big Day Out, the Sydney gents evidently thought, "Another tour? Why not!", and are currently trekking across the country on their Remembering the Mexican tour, in homage to that song that helped to make them so damn popular. And damn popular they are; tonight was the first of three sold-out shows at the Forum. So anyway, what a gig! Shows at the Forum are always awesome, and this was no exception. I would have liked to see another song or two from With Emperor Antarctica make it in, but all in all it was a solid setlist; I had no idea prior to the gig they were putting new songs in the set too, so that was awesome to hear. My only other (very minor) complaint was that I'm not sure if such a large venue is suited to this kind of music; with a lot of very slow and chilled out songs, it seemed a bit weird to see so many people standing around doing absolutely nothing. They had the same problem at Big Day Out too. But they got the crowd moving with the "big hits" and on the whole, it was just a great show from a great band. Can't wait for album number two!

(SeanceMascara's) Big Day Out @ Flemington Racecourse (2012-01-29)

Another year another Big Day Out. I hadn't planned on going to this one but you can't turn down free tickets. The lineup was a little weaker than the last few years and at times throughout the day I found there was no one I actually wanted to watch. And for the first time I only had one clash at the festival and sadly it was a bad one. Battles vs Mariachi El Bronx. However as it turned out I got a ticket to the Mariachi sideshow the next night so my choice to see Battles paid off.

Hunting Grounds
I was late for these guys which sucked because I always enjoy watching them play. Especially this time because of the Beastie Boys cover. It ruled

Frenzal Rhomb
I don't think anyone could watch this set and not have a good time. Frenzal Rhomb are just of those bands that make you want to trash around like an idiot with 10,000 other people and this set did exactly that.

Best Coast
I didn't enjoy these guys as much as I did at Golden Plains last year. It kind of seemed like they were going through the motions a bit. If it wasn't for the 3 or 4 songs they played here they didn't last time this set would have been a total write off for me.

I actually had not heard of these guys prior to this set and to be honest I'm not overly sure why I decided to catch them. That said I'm really glad I did because this set was fantastic. I've since gotten their album and listen to it heaps.

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All
This set was just as ridiculous as I thought it would be. A huge tent filled with white people getting down to black music. As a result I was a million miles back and the recording is distant. I also missed the first 15 or so minutes. Seeing Turnt Down was a huge bonus though. Love that song. Was bummed they didn't play it last time I caught them. Radicals owned again by the way.

Somewhere in here I caught The Living End's set and the first half of My Chemical Romance who were both pretty good but I'm sorry to say I made an error I've never done before while recording and forgot to start recording the sets. I had it on pre-record and simply forgot to push the button a second time. A shame really but there's nothing I can do about it now.

Battles
The best set of the day by far. I'd been waiting for this show for exactly 4 years (yeah I saw them 4 years ago to the day) and Battles delivered something else. I was concerned about how they would go about doing vocals not only on the new songs but the older ones as well. Solution, have the guest vocalists record video of them singing it and play it on 2 giant screens behind the band. As for the older songs, re-record the vocals with a bunch of kids. It seems simple and worked stupidly well. God, I could listen to this set a hundred times before I get sick of it.

This set was recorded quite close to the left speaker stack. I did this to eliminate as much crowd noise as I could and it seemed to work out.

Soundgarden
This set turned out to be my favorite of the day behind Battles. I'm not super familiar with their material but it surprised me how much I knew. At times it kind of seemed like the band weren't super into it and doing it more for the money than because they wanted to but to be honest I didn't care. I was just happy to get a chance to see them. Never thought I would.

This one was recorded just outside the D-Barrier on the Soundgarden side of the mainstage. I was pretty much in line with the speaker stack and am quite happy with the results considering the circumstances.

Kanye West
This set turned out to be one on the highlights of the day despite the fact I thought all along that Kanye wouldn't be able to pull of the headline spot. I was wrong and he dominated it. From starting the show on a cherry picker to the dancers on stage everything worked. My only criticism is that the show should have ended after stronger. The last 3 songs (half hour) were such a downer compared to the rest of the set. Also! Well done on going 30 minutes overtime. I'm not sure why more headliners dont do this when music runs till 11 anyway.

I recorded this one from the same spot I recorded Soundgarden from. I couldn't be bothered moving much so yeah. There is a bit of wind noise in this which is unavoidable and one of the bigger downers of recording an outdoor set.

Porcupine Tree @ The Palace (2010-02-07)

Supporting by Sleep Parade.

Sleep Parade
So, after not listened to Sleep Parade since I tracked the recording of the last time I saw them I was again really impressed with them. They are now a four piece and they sound much much better because of it. I'm pretty sure I said Id get the album after the last time I saw them so I'll get it now... almost 2 years after I should have.
The new songs that I saw were good although I'm bummed I missed the first two songs (which were also new). But based on this the new record is going to sound pretty epic.

Porcupine Tree
When I heard this would be an album start to finish gig and then a few hits I wasn't quite sure if I'd like it. In the end the 'album' was one giant 60 minute song and the 'hits' was almost the length of a regular set so it turned out to be pretty awesome.

Also, Porcupine Tree are pretty crazy about being anti-taping. No cameras at all?? Give me a break guys. What I do isn't hurting you in anyway and in fact is probably beneficial in some small way.

Helm (and other awesomeness), 11/05/2012 @ the Espy

So, Gold Coast proggy/post-rockers Helm made the journey south, in support of their newest single Bullets (which features a pretty awesome guest drummer). I really enjoyed their set supporting The Butterfly Effect last year (more so than The Butterfly Effect as it were), and I've been really getting into their two albums in the past few months, so I was more than keen to check them out this time. Especially with dat support bill, and the venue being walking distance :)

So first up, we have the never-failing-to-be-awesome Ezekiel Ox, doing his thing with just a microphone and his guitar. Obviously I'm a bit biased being a fan of his previous (and current) work, but in some respects his solo (and Fury) shows are some of the sets I've enjoyed the most from him over the years. I really appreciate how deeply personal some of the songs are to him; you get to see another side of him rather than the usual in-your-face ranting punk rocker (although I do enjoy that side of him too). So anyway. A nice cruisy set to kick the evening off; I guess most of these tunes are going to be appear on the next Fury album, if and when that ever gets released. I hope it does.

Up next was an absolute belter from stoner/riff-heavy rockers Dive Into Ruin, who for the uninitiated feature Craig (bass/vox in this band) and Trent (drums) from Mushroom Giant - although they couldn't sound less like Mushroom Giant if they tried. I don't think I saw these guys at all in 2011, so I was really looking forward to this one because they were one of the first bands out of this underground scene that I got into when I moved to Melbourne. I'm happy to report they still sound awesome, although I couldn't remember a lot of the songs being played. And there were quite a few newies in there too. The setlist I grabbed doesn't exactly match what Craig introduced some of the songs as, so I've just had to wing it a little bit. Plus the titles are in shortened setlist form. But yeah, these guys are great. Hope to see a bit more of them this year.

Ennis fucking Tola. When did I see these guys for the first time? I can't remember, I think it was the Floating Me gig at the East Brunswick (RIP) last year, and they made an immediate impression on me that night. There's just nobody around at the moment that sounds quite like them, and with their recent run of reasonably frequent gigs, they're looking more and more at home on a live stage. Whether it was because it was their last show for a while (they're now going to get stuck into making their second album), or maybe it's just because they're awesome, they had a very respectable-sized, and very appreciative crowd on this night. What a good set this was. They played plenty of old tunes and some solid newies from that eagerly-anticipated upcoming album and like I said, their stage presence is improving significantly. The friend I was with has been a bit harsh on them for being a boring live band in the past (I never agreed with him though), but he enthusiastically declared at the end of their set that he was very impressed with their progress. So yay for them having another fan, they deserve it. Anyway. Great set!

(download to follow)

Unfortunately that set was so awesome that lots of people decided to leave before Helm (it was also getting pretty late), which was a real shame because these poor dudes travelled a long way and I think people really should have stayed at least for a few songs to give them a bit of support. Frontman Lucas Stone understandably commented on the sparse crowd at the front of the room; he did it in a jocular manner but it was obvious he was a little disappointed. Neverthless, the show must go on as they say, and go on it did, in great form. The small crowd didn't seem to bother them; they played really enthusiastically, especially during their heavy bits. It's a bit cliche, but the "whole group headbang" always looks pretty awesome. Anyway, yeah, good set, it was a fucking late one but worth sticking it out for! More people need to appreciate this band!

The Mountain Goats @ The Toff in Town (09-05-2012)

Supported by Catherine Traicos

Of the five or six times I've seen the Mountain Goats this show ranks up there with the best. In probably the longest set I've seen them play, they performed 25 songs spanning the last 10 years of their discography. Difficult to pick a highlight, new songs like "Night Light" from their upcoming album Transcendental Youth I enjoyed just as much as older favourites like "Palmcorder Yajna" and "You or Your Memory".

The Hives @ Belly Up Tavern (2012-04-17)

Supported by The Bronx.

So after missing The Bronx earlier in the year in Australia and having never seen The Hives before I thought it would be cool to catch them on the same bill while I'm over in America. I didn't realise when I bought tickets that Solana Beach was almost 2 hours from Hollywood but in the end it didn't matter. The venue for this was also one of the best I've ever been too. Even at capacity there was heaps of room to chill and dance and for both sets I had a perfect vantage point towards the right and even Tab could see everything for a change. Good job on your venues America.

The Bronx
Seriously love these guys. Was really gutted when they were announced as supports for Soundgarden earlier in the year and not having tickets to see them. However, when this show was announced it seemed like the planets aligned so that I could see them... or something. Regardless, here is a typically awesome Bronx show. It was cool to see them work The Hives' crowd from not being overly interested to being much more animated and into it.

I recorded this from directly to the right of the soundboard so the sound is pretty good. However, the vocals are quite low throughout as they were on the night. Not sure what was going on there...

The Hives
This set was just really really fun. Couldn't help but dance along really. There's a butt load of new songs in the set which is great but at the same time there was heaps from the back catalogue I'd be keen to see as well.

I recorded this one in the same manner as The Bronx yet the results are much better. Clearer vocals and better instrument separation. I'm quite happy with this one.

Real Estate @ The Corner Hotel (2012-03-12)

Supported by The Twerps and Sures.

I felt far to shit from Golden Plains to get there in time for Sures. However, I can never miss a chance to see The Twerps.

The Twerps
This rates up there as one of the best Twerps shows I've seen. Largely due in part to the fact they finally played Bring Me Down at a show I was at. My favorite track off their album and worked just as well live as the studio counterpart. Marty was awkward chatty as usual so that was fun as well.
It's worth noting that Rick wasn't playing with them this show. They've got some other dude filling in for them overseas and he was there tonight. He wasn't too bad actually.
I recorded this from towards the middle-left of the venue and as such the sound isn't as clear as it could be. There is also a bit of chatter throughout that is especially noticeable on bring me down.

Real Estate
I first found out about Real Estate about two years ago via a blog I follow NYCTaper. Basically they do what we do here but better and in New York. I remember reading several entries over a year about these guys and they always got a solid writeup. So I downloaded one of their recordings and was hooked. I actually must have listened to that a few dozen times before I even got their first album. Fast forward a bit and they got a late minute addition to Golden Plains where I knew they would shine (they did) and a sideshow at one of my favorite venues. Couldn't really ask for more.
The show itself was perfect. A great mix of tracks from both their albums and a new song. I'm really looking forward to seeing what these guys do next. And I'm happy that the wait to see them again is just over a month away. I just pray they don't clash with one of my must sees at Coachella.

I recorded this from my usual spot at The Corner. Up front on the left about a meter from the speaker stack. This generally results in great recordings and tonight was no exception. A very faithful representation of the show.
